Open CSV to JSON converter →1. Prepare one worksheet
Use this workflow for a simple table that should become an array of records. Put unique, nonempty column names in the first row. Remove merged headings, title rows and totals that are not records. Every row must have the same number of fields.
Keep identifiers with leading zeros as text in Excel before exporting. If Excel has already changed 0012 to 12, the converter cannot recover those zeros. CSV exports cell values, not formulas, workbook styling or multiple sheets.
2. Export comma-delimited CSV
Use Excel’s Save As or Save a Copy and choose CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited) where available. Command names vary by version. Export the intended active worksheet and keep your original workbook.
Open the file in a text editor and check the delimiter. Regional settings can produce semicolons; choose the matching separator in the converter. Do not replace every separator blindly because it may also occur inside a quoted value.
3. Convert a small example
Paste this CSV into the converter, select Comma and choose Convert:
Download the sample CSVname,city,customer_id
Asha,Mumbai,0012
Sam,"New York, NY",0013You should receive two records:
[
{"name": "Asha", "city": "Mumbai", "customer_id": "0012"},
{"name": "Sam", "city": "New York, NY", "customer_id": "0013"}
]The quotes around New York, NY keep its comma inside one cell. A double quote inside a quoted field must be doubled. Values remain strings, including identifiers, numbers, dates and booleans; no automatic type inference takes place.
4. Check and save the result
Compare the number of JSON objects with the data rows. Inspect headers, punctuation, non-English text, dates and identifiers. Select Download result to save result.json. If the automatic download does not start, use the visible Save link. Open the saved file in a text editor before using it in an application.
Tool processing happens in your browser; you can paste CSV or open a UTF-8 CSV/TSV file locally, up to 2 MB. It does not read an Excel workbook directly. Avoid using confidential data in shared computers or screenshots.
Common problems and fixes
Wrong field count
Look for an unquoted comma, unmatched quote or missing delimiter.
Duplicate or empty headers
Give every column a distinct name in the first row.
All columns in one field
Select the matching comma, semicolon or tab separator and convert again.
Dates or large numbers changed
Inspect the CSV itself. This tool cannot undo spreadsheet precision loss or date formatting.
When to use another workflow
This converter does not open .xlsx files directly or build nested JSON structures. For large datasets, repeated jobs or a specific API schema, use a data pipeline with explicit types and validation. A string such as "false" is not boolean false.
