1. Choose this workflow

Validate an XML document and indent nested elements for inspection. Mixed-content elements stay together to avoid changing meaningful spaces within text.

2. Prepare your input

Paste a complete XML document with a root element and matching closing tags. Preserve original bytes when signatures or exact serialization matter.

3. Follow a worked example

<items><item>Notebook</item></items> becomes an items element containing an indented item. A mismatched closing tag is rejected.

4. Check the result

Compare the output with the example and original. Check punctuation, case, spacing, line order and identifiers where relevant. Use the available copy or download action and inspect the result in the receiving application. Retain the source until the change is verified.

5. Can I use the output for signed XML?

Do not reformat digitally signed XML. Serialization can change a document’s byte representation and invalidate its signature. XML declarations and namespace serialization may differ from the original.

6. Recover from an error

Try the small example first. Read the error message and check syntax and the selected operation. If output differs from your intention, return to the original and change one setting at a time. Formatting and conversion do not validate the meaning of data.

Try the workflow

Start with a small example and check the result before using your own data.
